Where can you purchase cannabis?

Cannabis is sold in privately owned, government-monitored stores that must acquire their cannabis from a federally-approved supplier.

Consumers can also purchase their cannabis online at the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) website (www.albertacannabis.org).


Where can you consume?

Smoking is allowed on private property and residences with the landowner’s approval. For rental properties, landlords can write-in or continue cannabis smoking restrictions similar to those for smoking tobacco and other substances. Landlords can also add restrictions to grow beyond those imposed by the federal government.

Smoking marijuana outdoors and public spaces is left up to municipalities, with some, such as Edmonton, tightening restrictions on all smoking and others, such as Calgary, implementing complete public smoking bans.

Province wide, prohibited areas include hospital, school or child-care property, within the prescribed proximity of a playground, sports or playing field, skate or bike park, zoo, outdoor theater, or outdoor pool.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a vehicle for both drivers and passengers. The law applies regardless of whether the vehicle is in motion. Parked RVs being used as temporary residences are an exception.


Possession

The legal age to buy or possess cannabis in Alberta is 18, lower than the national statutory minimum age of 19, which applies in most of Canada’s other provinces and territories.

Consumers are limited to 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of cannabis per transaction.

The province allows possession by adults of up to 30 grams of cannabis in a public place. In a vehicle, cannabis must be stored in a sealed container that is not accessible during transport to the driver or passengers. Growing guidelines

British Columbia

Where can you purchase cannabis?

Cannabis is sold in privately owned stores and in BC Cannabis Stores (BCCS) operated by the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB). The LDB oversees the stores, online sales, and are the sole wholesale distributor of non-medical cannabis.

Both government-run and private retail stores are only permitted to sell a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis, or the equivalent in oil or seed, to an individual at one time.

BCCS are the province’s sole online (www.bccannabisstores.com) cannabis retailer.

Illegal sale of cannabis can result in a number of provincial offences ranging from $2,000 to $100,000 in fines, as well as three to 12 months imprisonment.


Where can you consume?

Indoor smoking and vaping are not allowed in a workplace, restrooms, meeting rooms, break rooms, common areas within apartment buildings, condominiums, or dormitories. A person cannot smoke or vape cannabis in a bus, train, taxi or ferry, or stops or similar places marked for passenger loading or unloading.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a land, sea, or air vehicle, or as a passenger in a vehicle. The law applies regardless of whether the vehicle is in motion.


Possession

The minimum age to buy or possess cannabis in British Columbia is 19.

The province allows possession by adults 19 and older of up to 30 grams of cannabis in a public place. In a vehicle, cannabis must be stored in a sealed container that is not accessible during transport to the driver or passengers. The government has set equivalencies for one (1) gram of dried cannabis to equal five (5) grams of fresh cannabis, 15 grams of edibles, 70 grams of liquid, 0.25 grams of concentrate and one plant seed.

Manitoba

Cannabis is sold in privately owned stores in Manitoba. These stores control online sales of cannabis products to adults 19+. The storage, purchase, distribution, and sale of cannabis is regulated by the Liquor and Gaming Authority, while Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries tracks the supply of cannabis sold in the province.

Retail stores are permitted to sell a maximum of 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of dried cannabis to an individual at one time. Retailers are allowed to sell online and make home deliveries.


Where can you consume?

Smoking is prohibited in most public spaces, including parks and beaches, as well as many locations where liquor and tobacco are allowed. It is allowed on private property.

It is illegal to consume cannabis in a moving or parked vehicle for either drivers or passengers.

Growing guidelines

Manitoba joins Quebec and Nunavut among provinces and territories to ban home growing.

New Brunswick

Where can you purchase cannabis?

The only place to purchase non-medical cannabis is through the government’s Cannabis NB, a crown subsidiary of the New Brunswick Liquor Corporation.

Online sales are available from the Cannabis NB website (www.cannabis-nb.com).

Customers are permitted to buy a maximum of 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces of dried cannabis at one time, or equivalents in fresh cannabis and cannabis oils. Also cannabis accessories.


Where can you consume?

Smoking is not allowed in public places, and cannabis was added by the government to banned substances in its Smoke-free Places Act. It is allowed in private residences and adjacent property. Smoking and growing are allowed in rentals, unless prohibited by lease or property agreements. Landlords cannot restrict the use of non-smoked cannabis.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating an on-road or off-road vehicle for either drivers or passengers. The law applies regardless of whether the vehicle is in motion. Growing guidelines

These regulations do not apply for approved and licensed home-grown medical marijuana, which is governed by national laws. 

Newfoundland and Labrador

Where can you purchase cannabis?

Consumers in Newfoundland and Labrador are able to purchase from private retailers overseen and supplied by providers licensed by the government’s Liquor Corporation.

Retailers cannot currently sell online or by telephone for delivery. They may provide call or click for pickup options, but the customer would be required go to the store to pay for and receive the product.

Smoking in Newfoundland and Labrador is only allowed in private residences and on private property, and is not allowed in public spaces, workplaces, or vehicles.

Property owners and landlords retain the right to restrict the smoking and growing of marijuana in leases and business contracts.

Consumption in public can result in fines between $50 and $500.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a vehicle or boat. Penalties range from $300 to $10,000 or two (2) to seven (7) days in jail.

In a vehicle, cannabis must be stored in a sealed container that is not accessible during transport to the driver or passengers.


Possession

Residents can also purchase recreational cannabis online (www.ntlcc-cannabis.ca) or via mail order.

Minors are allowed in stores if accompanied by a parent or authorized adult.

Customers are permitted to buy a maximum of 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of dried cannabis at one time, or equivalents in fresh cannabis and cannabis oils.

Municipalities can make bylaws to expand areas where smoking recreational marijuana is prohibited.

Consuming cannabis is not allowed in public areas frequented by children and crowds.

Smoking is not allowed in most public places. The Nova Scotia Smoke-Free Places Act, which requires all indoor workplaces and public places, outdoor areas of restaurants, bars, lounges, and cabarets to be smoke-free, was expanded to cover cannabis.

Like tobacco, cannabis is also banned at beaches, areas children frequent, sports venues, and public trails. Public consumption fines can cost up to $2,000.

Cannabis consumption is allowed in private residences and in some common areas within multi-unit dwellings. Smoking and growing are allowed in rentals unless prohibited by lease or property agreements. The province is also moving to allow landlords to amend leases for allowing prohibitions.

Nova Scotia’s 10 public universities and 13 community college campuses are taking their own approaches to consumption, with most banning or restricting consumption.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a vehicle for either drivers or passengers, and they can be fined up to $2,000.

Nunavut

Where can you purchase cannabis?

The government of Nunavut currently run an online store by way of a one-year, non-exclusive agreement between the Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Commission (NULC) and Canopy Growth. Private and public retail options will be permitted at a later date.

Under this agreement, Canopy Growth delivers cannabis ordered through the province’s online portal ( www.tweed.com) directly to consumers.

Online customers will be permitted to buy a maximum of 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of dried cannabis at one time, or equivalents in fresh cannabis and cannabis oils.


Where can you consume?

Smoking is allowed in limited places indoors and outdoors where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted. It is allowed in private residences as long as odors cannot be detected from another dwelling. Smoking is not allowed in common areas for apartments and condos. Consumption is allowed in rentals unless prohibited by lease or property agreements.

Consuming cannabis in public is not allowed in most restaurants, bars, hospitals, schools, child-care centers, sports facilities, or public places. Consumption is prohibited within three (3) meters, or about 10 feet, of entrances and exits to such areas. Public consumption can be punished by fines from $200 to $2,000.

Ontario

Where can you purchase cannabis?

Consumers in Ontario can purchase cannabis online for mail-order delivery through the government-run Ontario Cannabis Store (www.ocs.ca) or visit one of Ontario’s newly opened private retailers.

Customers are permitted to buy a maximum of 30 grams, slightly more than one ounce, of dried cannabis at one time.


Where can you consume?

Smoking recreational cannabis is permitted wherever smoking tobacco is allowed. It is also allowed in private residences, including porches and backyards. Renters can smoke inside units or balconies unless prohibited by lease or property agreements.

Breaking those rules can be punishable by a $1,000 fine for a first offense and $5,000 for subsequent violations.

It is worth noting that public parks that do not serve as playgrounds will permit consumption of cannabis as they allow consumption of tobacco products.

Smoking in public is not allowed. It is allowed on private property and residences with the property owners’ approval, although some condominium owners associations have moved to ban smoking, which they retain the right to do. For rental properties, landlords can add or continue cannabis smoking restrictions similar to those for smoking tobacco and other substances. Landlords can also add restrictions to growing. Smoking on private campgrounds is also banned, unless permitted by the owner.

It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a vehicle for either drivers or passengers. The law applies regardless of whether the vehicle is in motion. It must be in a sealed container that is not immediately accessible to the driver or occupants.

The rules for transporting cannabis are the same as alcohol, which means that drivers or passengers cannot consume in any vehicle at any time, or possess cannabis in the passenger area.


Possession

The minimum age to buy or possess cannabis in Saskatchewan is 19.

The province allows possession by adults of up to 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of cannabis in a public place. The government has set equivalencies for one (1) gram of dried cannabis to equal:

  • five (5) grams of fresh cannabis
  • 15 grams, or one-half ounce (0.5 oz) of edibles
  • 70 milliliters, or 2.35 fluid ounces, of liquid
  • 0.25 grams of concentrate, and
  • one (1) plant seed

Yukon

Where can you purchase cannabis?

Recreational marijuana is currently available in one (1) government store in Whitehorse run by the Yukon Liquor Corporation (YLC). The YLC also offers online sales through www.CannabisYukon.org.

Customers are permitted to buy a maximum of 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of dried cannabis at a time, or their equivalents in fresh cannabis and cannabis oils.


Where can you consume?
